Pope Leo XIV lands in Uruguay today 🇺🇾 His three-day visit is the first stop on his first trip to Latin America as Pope. After Uruguay he goes on to Argentina and Peru. It’s also the first papal visit to Uruguay since John Paul II came in 1988, so this is a big honour for the country. He’ll be in Montevideo, Florida and Paysandú, way out in the far west. In Montevideo he isn’t staying in the centre. He’s also visiting Casavalle, one of the city’s most marginalised neighbourhoods, which is struggling with a lot of violence right now. His visit has given people there a huge amount of hope. It’s a big moment for a country that may surprise you. Uruguay has fully separated church and state since 1917. It’s also the least religious country in Latin America. Only about a third of Uruguayans call themselves Catholic, and more than half say they have no religion at all. 👀 Watch our Instagram stories all weekend. One of the team is going to the stadium to see the Pope in person! Want to know more about Uruguay and its unusual relationship between the state and religion? Head to guruguay.com
