I left Korea 20 years ago and currently living in Singapore 🇸🇬. People always ask me why I don't move back. I love Korea. It's my home. But I still can't bring myself to go back. 1. I STILL HAVEN'T MADE IT. This is probably the hardest one to admit. I left Korea 20 years ago with so many dreams. I wanted to build a better life. I wanted to become successful. I wanted to make something of myself. But here I am. 41 years old. And deep down, I still feel like I haven't achieved what I left home to achieve. 2. I'M SCARED I'M TOO OLD TO START OVER. I'm 41. I've watched friends move back to Korea, find jobs, settle down, and build their lives. But most of them went back when they were younger. What about me? What if nobody wants to hire a 41-year-old woman who's never worked in Korea? 3. I'M SCARED I WON'T FIT IN ANYMORE. I've spent almost my entire adult life overseas. I've never experienced working in Korea. The hierarchy, the expectations, the work culture... What if I can't adjust? It's strange to be afraid of living in your own country. But I am. 4. I'M SCARED EVERYTHING I'VE BUILT WILL MEAN NOTHING. I've worked hard for 20 years. I've made mistakes, learned new things, changed jobs, and started over more times than I can count. But what if all that experience doesn't mean much when I go back? What if I have to start from zero? That thought scares me more than I'd like to admit. 5. I'M SCARED I DON'T BELONG THERE ANYMORE. Korea will always be my home. But I've been away for so long. Sometimes I wonder if the country I remember is the same country I'd be going back to. And sometimes I wonder if I'm even the same person who left. Sometimes I wish I could tell my 21-year-old self that everything worked out exactly the way she dreamed.
