I have watched the video of Mrs. Risi Abdulkareem, the pregnant woman who reportedly had an encounter with the Kwara State Environmental Taskforce during the monthly sanitation exercise in Ilorin, and I have some serious questions. First, I want to make something clear. I support environmental sanitation. I support a clean Kwara State. I support the enforcement of laws that promote public order. But when did enforcing environmental laws become an excuse for allegedly subjecting citizens to degrading treatment? If a citizen violates a sanitation regulation, there are legal procedures for dealing with that violation. Where does physical force, dragging and tearing someone’s clothes come into this? And more importantly, if a woman repeatedly tells enforcement officers that she is pregnant, what should their response be? Does enforcement mean that citizens surrender their dignity and fundamental human rights? @KWHAofficial @PoliceNG @NhrcNigeria
