TENDENCIA · MÉXICO · ÚLTIMOS 7 DÍAS
Mexico City is preparing for Day of the Dead celebrations, with a monumental Catrina skeleton more than 30 metres tall now standing in the capital's main square, the Zocalo. Tourists and locals have been flocking to photograph the giant figure, inspired by one of the most iconic characters in Mexican culture. The Zocalo is also home to the country's largest altar. Day of the Dead is a pre-Hispanic tradition in which families remember their dead and celebrate the continuity of life. Altars are adorned with photographs, candles, marigolds, incense, sugar skulls, paper mache skeletons and sweets. November 1 is reserved for children returning from the afterlife, and November 2 for adults. The celebrations are recognised by UNESCO as Cultural Heritage, and the success of Pixar's "Coco" has made the event a major draw for visitors.
