Happy Birthday, Timothy B. After joining the Eagles in 1977, Schmit co-wrote and sang lead vocals on the 1978 Eagles song "I Can't Tell You Why." Schmit also toured with Jimmy Buffett from 1983-1985 as a member of the Coral Reefer Band. Timothy B. Schmit was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with the Eagles in 1998.

100 Moments That Shaped Rock Music 1. In the Beginning, There Was the Electric Guitar The year: 1928. The world had never even heard the word "rock." America was busy with the Great Depression and hunting for a drink, but somewhere amid the chaos, a spark of genius planted the seed of rock music. The electric guitar has since evolved immensely, bearing little resemblance to its original form. But the principle is unchanged: plug it into an amp and let the music roar. Some argue that electric guitar is absent from many classic rock songs (hello, acoustic purists). Others go even further, citing entire rock albums without any decent guitar at all (Genesis, anyone?). But let’s face it: rock’s revolution would be incomplete without its screaming six-string and the mythos of the one who wields it. 2. Chuck Berry Takes the Stage with "Johnny B. Goode" Before Chuck Berry, "rock ’n’ roll" was a slippery term. People had heard the genre, but no one had quite shown how it's done. Berry changed that. With wild duck-walks, blistering riffs, and bluesy swagger, he brought the whole package to the stage-and history was made. Marty McFly would later ride that same wave. 3. Bill Haley and the Comets Rock Around the Clock Shake, rattle, and roll. That’s the whole gospel. 4. Elvis Shakes His Hips Chuck Berry may have been the first rock virtuoso, but he had two key setbacks: (1) he was Black in 1950s America, which limited his crossover appeal, and (2) you can’t build a revolution on a duck walk alone. Elvis Presley brought something different-he was white, handsome, and had a thunderous voice. But most of all, he could grip an audience by the... well, pelvis. His hip-gyrating TV performances shocked America. Critics raged, but teenage girls swooned. Rock ’n’ roll was unstoppable. 5. The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show 1963: The Beatles release their debut album and ignite the British Invasion. But in 1964, their Ed Sullivan Show performance truly sealed the deal. It became the most-watched television broadcast in American history at the time, and overnight, the U.S. surrendered to Beatlemania. The world would soon follow. 6. Keith Moon Breaks the Rules (and His Drum Set) In the early '60s, during yet another rowdy London club gig, The Who’s drummer Keith Moon lost it. Furious with the sound system, he smashed his drum kit to bits. Soon, the rest of the band joined in, turning instrument destruction into a sacred concert finale. Thus, was born the image of the unhinged rock star. 7. Muddy Waters Rolls Stones While the Beatles became rock's golden boys, another band clawed its way to the top: the Rolling Stones. Ironically, they sold American-style blues rock back to America. Their name? Inspired by Muddy Waters' classic "Rollin' Stone Blues." 8. Dylan Goes Electric By 1965, Bob Dylan was already a folk-rock icon. But he wasn't done. He recorded Bringing It All Back Home, half acoustic and half electric, then shocked fans by plugging in at the Newport Folk Festival. They booed. They didn't get it. But history did. 9. Joan Baez Sings "We Shall Overcome" Bob Dylan’s partner in song and politics, Joan Baez, became the voice of protest. At the 1963 March on Washington, she sang the defining anthem of the civil rights era: "We Shall Overcome." 10. Otis Redding Rises, Then Falls In 1967, soul singer Otis Redding finally crossed into mainstream acclaim. After stunning crowds at Monterey, he released "(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay," his biggest hit. Then tragedy struck he died in a plane crash later that year. Rock's hall of fallen heroes grew. 11. Mama Cass Has One Sandwich Too Many Cass Elliot (Mama Cass to you, Naomi Cohen to her mother) was one quarter of The Mamas & The Papas-one of the defining folk-rock-psych groups of the late ’60s. In 1974, she died of a heart attack while indulging in one more thick, glorious sandwich-exactly the size you’d expect from someone her size (at her peak, the Mama weighed about as much as your average baby elephant). Like all deaths, it symbolized the end of an era. The greatest (literally!) of the flower children was gone. California still dreams about her sometimes... 12. Alvin Lee Breaks the Sound Barrier at Woodstock Playing "I’m Going Home" Alvin Lee is one of those overlooked rock heroes the genre is so good at producing. For insiders, no introduction is needed, but among the public, few have heard of this guitar wizard. As the frontman of Ten Years After, he still got his fifteen minutes of glory: Woodstock, 1969. There, he took the stage and unleashed a lightning-speed version of "I’m Going Home" that became legend. He later released some well-regarded albums and even scored a big hit ("I’d Love to Change the World"), but he never really broke into the charts. Still, for that one magical moment in 1969, Alvin Lee proved that rock ’n’ roll was alive and kicking-and that not all string-shredders are named Hendrix. In his own way, Alvin Lee succeeded. He changed the world. 13. Hendrix Shreds the National Anthem at Woodstock Same event, same mythos. Woodstock remains the ultimate symbol of a musical era. And Jimi Hendrix? He’s the poster child of all things Woodstock. His feedback-soaked version of the national anthem is the mother of all wild-guitar clichés. 14. Jim Morrison Sees Arthur Lee at a Club in L.A. The Doors are one of those bands whose myth only grew after they split. Most of the credit goes to their frontman, "The Lizard King" himself - Jim Morrison. But Morrison modelled much of his wild stage persona on another chameleon of the ’60s Los Angeles scene: Arthur Lee, the eccentric and electrifying leader of the band Love. Lee wasn’t just charismatic (and possibly more talented, though not as handsome) - he created one of the most perfect psychedelic rock albums ever: Forever Changes. 15. Paul Meets John July 6, 1957: Year One for music nerds. Two Liverpool lads met at a gig by John Lennon’s skiffle band (The Quarrymen), and sparks flew. Strange, how two polar opposites became each other’s musical soulmate. One, a brooding, egomaniacal philosopher. The other, a cheerful bassist with the personality of a happy Brussels sprout (though just as egocentric). Over time, the love faded-but that initial spark never died. We’re lucky we got to hear it. No doubt: the greatest duo of all time. 16. John Lennon Is Murdered There are many theories about when rock “died.” Most critics agree it was the day punk took the stage. But for me-and not just me-the day rock truly died was December 8, 1980. That’s when Mark David Chapman, a deranged man obsessed with The Catcher in the Rye, shot and killed the ultimate rock prophet. It was the day we all realized the world really isn’t a perfect place to live in. 17. Paul Is Dead? The urban legend with the longest legs. What hasn’t been said? What hasn’t been written? Even if all the clues buried in Beatles albums were just clever marketing stunts, the story lives on-fuelling endless music nerd debates across the globe. 18. Duane Allman Rides into Legend Is Duane Allman the greatest guitarist ever? We'll never know. But one thing’s for sure: the day he died in a motorcycle crash-head-on into a speeding truck-was one of the darkest days in Southern rock history. That was the moment the myth of the "Southern Rock Curse" was born: its founding fathers kept dying. Duane on a bike. Ronnie Van Zant in a plane. Tommy Caldwell of Marshall Tucker in a car. Since then, Southern rockers keep dying young with remarkable consistency, fuelling the legend of a genre that always held a place of honor in American rock- (and a very soft, tender spot in my heart). 19. The Stone Roses Prove Rock Will Never Die Few debates are as fierce among rock fans as the one over The Stone Roses’ 1989 debut. At first glance, the fanbase’s claims seem a bit... much. The greatest rock album ever? The record that brought pride back to rock? Come on-it’s just a band from late-’80s Manchester... But then you listen again. And again. And you realize-maybe their fans are onto something. After the musical wasteland of the 1980s, the world was starving for guitar-driven glory again. And that’s what this band delivered. Their debut album is distilled, untouchable perfection. Maybe not the best album ever, but absolutely essential for any serious rock collection. 20. The Beatles Record Sgt. Pepper 1967 was arguably rock’s greatest year (tied, maybe, with 1969). The crown jewel? Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It’s been praised to death-but in 1967 studio terms, this was revolutionary. Sure, some fans now claim the Beatles had better albums. But no one can take away its historical significance. And A Day in the Life? That track alone justifies the hype. 21. Brian Wilson steps out of the sandbox and writes PET SOUNDS We so easily throw around the title "genius" to anyone who asks for it. But Brian Wilson, leader of The Beach Boys, was truly one. The album PET SOUNDS is proof that madness, jealousy, and competitiveness pay off... That’s what happens when everything comes together in one album. There’s nothing like it. 22. Neil Young delivers the final kick to Charles Manson – There’s a mansion on the hill Neil Young is a problematic hero for all his fans, and far from being a role model. It seems that among all his shameful and embarrassing deeds, his brief connection to the crazy murderer Charles Manson in the ’60s is the most humiliating event. It took Young some time, but eventually, he rejected the devil’s image and found time to write a song about the whole thing with the perspective of years. His live performance of the song with his band - “Crazy Horse” - is the final kick in the ass of the madman Manson, who still rots in jail to this day. 23. LSD arrives in the world Over fifty years ago, a Swiss scientist named Albert Hofmann (no family relation, but certainly a conceptual connection to Abbie Hoffman, leader of the hippie movement) discovered LSD. The greatest hallucinogenic drug of them all. Since then, many misused it, but the world - though morally bankrupt - discovered psychedelic rock and the wonders of the White Rabbits. The sweet and destructive of genres. 24. The first human uses marijuana / hashish Interesting side note on the same topic. LSD induces hallucinations; marijuana just makes you feel good. The big problem - it’s illegal, kids. Without these two, Jerry Garcia would have been just a mustachioed, bearded wanderer... 25. Four students killed in Kent, Ohio In 1970, Nixon (without a doubt the tragic hero of American politics for generations) decided that the Vietnam quagmire wasn’t enough. In an inspiring move (inspiration can be dangerous, it turns out), he expanded the war by invading Cambodia to prevent a communist takeover. The American students struggled to see the logic in inflating the war (and rightly so, don’t look for logic in war) and went out to protest. Nixon decided to confront the protesters and sent police to violently suppress the riots. Four students from Kent State University paid the price with their lives. Neil Young did not forget their honor and built for them the most beautiful memorial one could imagine - writing the song OHIO, which he recorded with the band CSNY in the live album FOUR WAY STREET. 26. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane crashes to the ground One of the saddest yet most inspiring stories in rock history. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s plane decided in 1977 to give in to gravity and crashed, killing three band members (Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and backup singer Cassie Gaines) and one crew member. The surviving members were injured but lived to see about ten years later, Johnny Van Zant, Ronnie’s brother, take the stage and lead the reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd. Southern rock survived. 27. Buddy Holly’s plane (American Pie) breathes life again, Don McLean cashes in Many musicians died in plane crashes (Jim Croce too), but Buddy Holly’s crash is the most famous, thanks largely to Don McLean’s song “American Pie” (named after the crashed plane), forever engraving the immortal phrase - “the day the music died.” 28. Phil Spector invents a new recording method In the ’60s, Phil Spector - another screw loose - changed recording studios forever with his concept of The Wall of Sound. Two other worthy mentions: his final production of the Beatles’ LET IT BE album and producing ALL THINGS MUST PASS, George Harrison’s debut album. 29. Ray Davies (The Kinks) writes "LOLA," and the Transgender Movement Gets a Head Start The Kinks, one of the British Invasion's most essential bands, are frustratingly often pushed to the sidelines when discussing rock legends. Yet, thanks to the iconic hit "LOLA," they earned well-deserved recognition. The song, which brilliantly described an encounter between a boy and a girl who turns out to be... a boy, was incredibly ahead of its time. Decades before the topic became mainstream, "LOLA" gave transgender visibility a significant push forward. 30. Rock concert in Montreux, Switzerland (1971) Some jerk throws a flare, a genius (Zappa) gets lightly injured - and a legend is born - SMOKE ON THE WATER. That’s the story, in short of the birth of the most famous guitar riff. Many hate the song - they’re all wrong. 31. Third Grade: Johnny Rotten Misses the Dentist for the Third Time - Rock Begins Its March Toward Death If only he had learned how to sing. Maybe even play an instrument. And, for heaven's sake, if he had visited a dentist occasionally, perhaps we would have been spared the downfall of good old rock at the hands of British anarchists, the Sex Pistols. Still, things could have been worse. At least American punk bands generally knew how to play their instruments. 32. JFK gets tangled in Vietnam, Lyndon Johnson helps him, Nixon complicates everything The Vietnam War served as a fitting background for American political rock. It had all the ingredients necessary to birth a large, rebellious popular movement. Rock, just at its early growth and formation, fit perfectly as a cultural revolution atop the political one. We gained America’s soundtrack. 33. Martin Luther King is assassinated, Bono (U2) cashes in Similar to the Vietnam War, the fight for civil rights for African Americans stood at the center of the American political life in the ’60s. One of the highlights of the struggle was Martin Luther King’s assassination. The most successful (and well-known) song about the event (PRIDE) was written by an Irishman - Bono, leader of U2. 34. The big demonstration in Washington (where was Forrest Gump?) Abbie Hoffman, leader of the hippie movement, reveals to the American government exactly what he thinks of them (not something nice, really), and gathers the best sons of rock to his support. David Crosby responds by shaving his head and calling it hair... another instructive lesson on rock’s influence on politics and vice versa. 35. Roger McGuinn switches to 12 strings Jim or Roger, who cares? What does it matter that the idea wasn’t his?! The main thing is the performance. 36. The Mellotron is invented Progressive rockers discover their favorite “animal” isn’t really a dog... 48. While everyone else tried to stretch rock’s boundaries, he was busy preserving good old rock ’n’ roll. Later, after leaving the band, he wrote a solo album (Centerfield) in 1985, full of the spirit of ’60s rock. Bob Dylan sits in the pink house at Woodstock with the band The results: “Basement Tapes” and “Music from Big Pink” - A collection of so much talent never gathered again in one place. Marvin Gaye - one of the greatest lovers this planet ever knew - paid the price. 66. James Brown performs at Apollo In 1963, live performances looked a little different, it turns out. With the amount of sweat Brown left on the stage, you could fill a small lake every year. The Godfather of Soul shows the world how to put on a SHOW until all strength is exhausted. 67. The movie Shaft is released Isaac Hayes contributes the soundtrack, and millions of Black people discover how COOL it is to be Black. 68.
