The federal government’s new budget includes an ambitious goal of ending homelessness in Canada within 10 years. The federal government says it intends to "create the conditions to end homelessness" by setting up a new fund to support projects addressing health, addictions and social supports. The government has pledged $11.2 billion over the next four years to address homelessness, including money for transitional and permanent housing and integrated social supports for things like mental health and addiction. The budget proposes $17.8 billion in future years. The government estimates there are 65,000 homeless Canadians. Manitoba will receive $1-billion in new federal funding to build more than 2,000 supportive and transitional homes and a new Winnipeg Centre for Mental Health and Addictions, a plan referenced in the budget. Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared Friday with the province’s NDP Premier, Wab Kinew, who praised the announcement as “a huge, humongous deal for Manitoba.” Kinew said the province has its own goal of ending homelessness by 2031. Kinew said “generational” does not adequately describe the scale of the effort, comparing it to federal government investments in social housing in the 1960s.
