From the time I brought Spazzy home, I knew something wasn’t right. I had him at the vet so many times trying to figure out what was going on, but no one could give me an answer. Then one night, I found him curled up in a corner, barely hanging on. He was only about 4 months old. I rushed him to the emergency vet, and that’s when we finally found out he had FIP. A disease that, without treatment, was almost 100% fatal. I knew I had to act fast, so I did everything I possibly could to get my hands on treatment that wasn’t yet available through veterinarians here in the U.S. We started with daily injections, and thankfully, during his treatment, the pill version finally became available through veterinarians here. Toward the end of his treatment, he was able to switch to pills, which was such a relief for both of us. Since treatment has become more accessible, the outlook for cats diagnosed with FIP has changed so much. What was once almost always a death sentence is now something so many cats are surviving. Unfortunately, treatment is still very expensive, and not every family has the means to afford it. I can only hope that as it becomes more widely available, it also becomes more affordable. I think about how differently that night could have ended, and I’m just so thankful he’s still here. I’m also so grateful that other families now have a much better chance of saving their babies, too. Little did I know, surviving FIP wouldn’t be the last time I’d almost lose him… but that’s a story for another time. He went through so much at such a young age, and now I get to watch him grow up and be his silly, sweet little self. My little FIP survivor.
