TENDENCIA · BARÉIN · ÚLTIMOS 7 DÍAS
The danger of ex-pros moving into top jobs this quickly is that their playing legacy never gets time to settle. Michael Carrick is the clearest example. Whatever pressure he's under at Manchester United right now, it's worth going back to the midfielder he was. He defended by pressing space instead of players and cutting off passing lanes, then started attacks with long and short passing as good as any English midfielder of his era. Five Premier Leagues and a Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, who called him the best central midfielder in English football. Pep Guardiola called him "one of the best holding midfielders I've ever seen in my life". He won just 34 England caps in 15 years, so he was underrated then too, and a lot of the current Man Utd squad barely saw him play. The tough spot he's in might look unfair, but that's the point: it puts at risk a reputation that was underrated to begin with.
